Sportsmanship Code & Zero Tolerance Policy

This policy has been written by Tarneit North Football Club to help maintain a healthy balance between fair play and safety. The club aims to establish positive relationships between coaches, players, parents, spectators, and officials, while promoting the true meaning of SPORTSMANSHIP.

Definitions

Sportsmanship: Participating in sports with conduct and attitude considered appropriate, especially fair play and courtesy.

Ethics: Principles governing right and wrong accepted by an individual or a group.

Integrity: Firm adherence to values that incorporate principles of honesty.

Fundamentals of Sportsmanship

  • Gain an understanding of the rules of the game
  • Exercise representative behaviour
  • Recognise and appreciate outstanding play
  • Exhibit respect for match officials
  • Openly display respect for opponents
  • Display pride in actions and behaviour

Sportsmanship Code – Coaches

  • Prioritise emotional and physical wellbeing over the desire to win
  • Respect the integrity and individuality of athletes
  • Demonstrate high moral character, leadership, and behaviour
  • Learn the rules and set a positive example
  • Shake hands before and after each match
  • Be responsible for players and parents on the sideline

Sportsmanship Code – Players

  • Learn the rules and treat everyone with respect
  • Attend training sessions and matches prepared
  • Show good sportsmanship before and after games
  • Control temper and avoid inappropriate language
  • Shake hands with opponents and officials after the match

Sportsmanship Code – Parents & Spectators

  • Encourage children to play by the rules
  • Applaud good play and speak respectfully
  • Watch and enjoy the game
  • Thank coaches and remember they are volunteers
  • Refrain from negative behaviour or language
  • Do not coach your child; encourage them

Zero Tolerance / No Dissent Policy

Tarneit North Football Club enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy toward dissent, abuse, intimidation, or unsportsmanlike conduct from players, coaches, parents, or spectators.

Penalties for Dissent or Unsportsmanlike Conduct

  • 1st Yellow Card: Disciplinary action for coaches, players, or parents
  • 2nd Yellow Card (same season): Further penalties applied
  • Red Card: Suspension and possible fines

The Executive Committee will review all reported incidents.

Unacceptable Behaviours

  • Abuse, fighting, taunting, or harassment
  • Disrespect towards officials, players, or coaches
  • Blaming others for outcomes
  • Inappropriate behaviour on social media

Acceptable (Expected) Behaviours

  • Congratulating teammates and opponents
  • Handshaking after matches
  • Thanking officials, coaches, and volunteers
  • Treating competition as a game
  • Showing respect within the community

Alcohol & Drug Use

The use of alcohol or drugs is strictly forbidden in connection with any Tarneit North Football Club activities or events.

By following this Code of Conduct, members of Tarneit North Football Club help create an environment of respect, integrity, and sportsmanship within the club and the broader community.
